Plot:

Lucas “Luke” Jackson (Paul Newman) is charged with a petty theft he committed when he was drunk, and is sentenced to a prison camp where he is put on the chain-gang. In an attempt to “break him” the prisoners unsuccessfully try beating him up, but Luke only gains respect and the nickname “Cool Hand Luke.” Luke is informed of his grandmother’s death and unsuccessfully tries escaping. Luke refuses to give up and each time he tries to escape, he is apprehended and severely punished.
