While incarcerated with condemned killer Ben Harper (Peter Graves), fake preacher Harry Powell (Robert Mitchum) discovers Ben has $10,000 worth of stolen money hidden in a place only his family knows about. Once released, Harry hunts down Ben’s family and works his way in to Ben’s wife, Willa’s (Shelley Winters), heart and convinces her to marry him. With intentions of only finding the money, he soon pesters his step-children about the whereabouts of the money, but the kids refuse to talk because they promised their father they would never tell.
