Top 10 Moments the Grammys Got Right

The Grammy Awards don’t always get it right. But then again, no awards ceremony ever does. Sure, for every artist they rightfully acknowledge and bestow the gilded gramophone upon there are ten flash-in-the-pan artists that quickly become the fodder for VH1’s decade-specific snark-nostalgia. But, letting the many, many mistakes slide, here is a list of the top ten moments in Grammy history when they, the Recording Academy and Grammy Foundation, actually got it right.

1. 1965 Best New Artist: The Beatles

2. 1984 Album of the Year: Thriller by Michael Jackson

3. 1959 Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Individual or Group: Basie by Count Basie

4. 1969 Record of the Year: “Mrs. Robinson,” performed by Simon and Garfunkel

5. 1995 Song of the Year: “Streets of Philadelphia” by Bruce Springsteen.

6. 1998 Best Alternative Music Album: OK Computer by Radiohead

7. 2004 Album of the Year Award: Speakerboxxx/The Love Below by Outkast

8. 1993 Best Alternative Music Album: Bone Machine by Tom Waits

9. 2008 Best Comedy Album: The Distant Future by Flight of the Conchords

10.1997 Best Rap Album: The Score by the Fugees

While I still maintain some serious reservations for the awards ceremony overall, I do hold some hope, however misguided, that the academy will get it right in one or two places.
