Like most trilogies, Lord of the Rings starts strong but peters out. The Fellowship of the Ring is a great movie. I particularly love how it slowly changes from a happy frolic-fest to a dark and dreary gloomy world as the weight of the situation settles in on the main characters. In my opinion you should watch the entire trilogy, but don't expect the second and third installments to be anywhere near as good as the first one.
